Having just announced that her debut solo album is set for release on Hand Mirror on April 24, 2020, Harkin’s new single ‘Nothing The Night Can’t Change’ is streaming now.

The track features Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa and Wye Oak & Bon Iver's Jenn Wasner and is streaming online now. Harkin will tour across Europe over the next few months supporting both Sleater-Kinney & Torres.

Speaking about the new single, Harkin said “Nothing the Night Can’t Change’ is a love song inspired by the North of England. Anyone that’s been on a night out in Leeds, or any of those places knows all the switches get flipped after dark. The romance and chaos of this song belongs to those nights.

Harkin has been touring since her teens and is one of the most prolific collaborators of her generation. Now, a lifelong collaborator steps into the singular.

The album was written on the road, in a cottage in the Peak District - the UK’s oldest national park - and in Upstate New York. The record was as nomadic as its creator, made over time in three different time zones, and features Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak and Bon Iver.

The result of Harkin’s unique trajectory is an album that fuses the eeriness of the English countryside with the pace of the mechanized world. In addition to the live foundation of the record, formed of her in-demand musicianship and that of her world class collaborators, manipulated samples and synths howl out over the songs like the winds on the moors themselves. The album cover features a portrait by acclaimed cinematographer Ashley Connor (Angel Olsen, Maggie Rogers, Mitski, Broad City S5, The Miseducation of Cameron Post) overlaid with Harkin’s own photo of marquee letters she discovered in a venue laundry room. Truly an album born on the road.

ABOUT HAND MIRROR

Musician Katie Harkin and her partner the poet and live arts organiser Kate Leah Hewett - founded Hand Mirror in 2019. As Harkin says, "culture has always been our personal scaffolding and, with Hand Mirror, we want to build something that can in turn provide that support to others."

'Harkin' is the first full length album to be released on Hand Mirror. Hand Mirror will also be home to literary publications, compilations and live events in both the US and the UK.

Harkin: Guardian Best New Music 2019

From 2005 to about 2014, Katie Harkin was chief songwriter for Leeds’ grungy, melodic Sky Larkin, one of their generation’s most underrated indie bands. Harkin is now probably better known as rock’s most in-demand side woman, as a touring member of Wild Beasts and Sleater-Kinney, Courtney Barnett and Waxahatchee’s bands. She has signed with Rough Trade for publishing: 2019 promises more of her fantastic, vaulting songwriting, finally. READ MORE FROM THE GUARDIAN

HARKIN RELEASES DEBUT SOLO TRACK "MIST ON GLASS"

"2019 promises more of her fantastic, vaulting songwriting, finally." - The Guardian

Katie Harkin, founding member/songwriter of Sky Larkin and touring member and collaborator of Courtney Barnett, Sleater-Kinney, Waxahatchee, Kurt Vile and Wild Beasts, has self-released her debut solo song "Mist on Glass", now available on most major streaming platforms. The release also includes a "b-side" cover of Comsat Angels' "Independence Day", recorded with Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) and Hayden Thorpe (Wild Beasts) and captured on video by Shure Microphones.

The release is being met with praise from her Sleater-Kinney bandmate Carrie Brownstein, who penned a letter to Harkin about the song for Talkhouse, plus praise from fans Courtney Barnett, Taylor Schilling, and Lance Bangs.

"I wrote "Mist On Glass" between borrowed rooms on tour and my cottage among the howling moors of The Peak District National Park, searching for a sound that combined the eeriness of the English countryside with the pace of the mechanized world," says Harkin. ""Mist On Glass" confronts identity, conflict and self determination."

TIDAL premiered "Mist on Glass", and Huck Mag ran a feature in which Harkin discusses putting forth solo material for the first time ever. The Guardian UK recently included Harkin in its "Best New Music of 2019" feature.
